UK fast-tracks abolishment of VAT rate on digital editions

The UK decision to “axe the reading tax”, the abolishment of the 20 % value-added tax (VAT) on digital editions, has been fast-tracked and entered into force on May 1, 2020.

The campaign of the UK Publishers Association and others has paid off: As of 1st December, the UK will abolish the current 20 % tax on e-books, online newspapers and digital magazine editions.
Poland and Slovenia Reduce VAT on eBooks

Following legislative change in the European Union (EU) on 2 October 2018, EU Member States continue to reduce VAT rates for eBooks and audiobooks, often aligning them with physical books. Slovenia and Poland are the latest countries to act while the Publishers Association in the UK Campaigns hard.
Consumption Tax (JCT) rates going up in Japan

After 1 April 2017 (not an April Fools’ joke), the overall Japanese Consumption Tax rate in will rise to 10%. The plan is to maintain the consumption tax on food and home delivery of newspapers at 8%, while books, magazines and newspapers purchased at newsstands and their e-versions will be taxed at 10%. The Japanese Government is currently investigating the possibility of applying the reduced tax rate for books and magazines.
