UNESCO names Sharjah World Book Capital 2019
UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova has named Sharjah, widely considered the cultural capital of the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf, UNESCO World Book Capital 2019.
IPA President, Michiel Kolman, reaffirms IPA commitment to literacy in Chengdu, China
IPA President Michiel Kolman today reaffirmed the IPA’s commitment to the promotion of literacy during a speech in Chengdu, China, on UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day. Speaking at the Reading Promotion Summit, at South West Jiao Tong University (WJTU), in Sichuan Province, Kolman said the IPA would continue to work closely with UNESCO and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) to spotlight the issue worldwide.
World publishers and librarians issue joint pledge to strive for universal access to information
Geneva and The Hague — The world bodies speaking for the publishing and library sectors, the IPA and IFLA, today pledge to find mechanisms for universal access to information, and to help national and international authorities to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals linked to literacy, education and reading.
UNESCO names Athens World Book Capital 2018
Athens has been named World Book Capital 2018 by the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee, comprising representatives of the IPA, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), and UNESCO, which met at UNESCO headquarters, in Paris.
Why literacy matters more than ever in the 21st century.
On International Literacy Day, 8 September 2015, the IPA, International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), International Authors Forum (IAF) and Reading & Writing Foundation (RWF) jointly call on UN member states to implement coherent and properly resourced strategies to promote literacy for all. Literacy is a basic skill that everyone needs. Without it, people will be condemned to live poorer, less fulfilled lives.
Conakry will be World Book Capital City 2017
Each year, IPA and its partners awards the title of World Book Capital. The 2017 laureate will be Conakry, the capital of Guinea.
