IPA Vice-President testifies in Canadian Copyright Review

In 2012 Canada changed its copyright law to include education as part of its fair-dealing exception to Copyright. The Copyright Act is now under review and the IPA and its Canadian members have testified to the negative impact of the extended exception.

With a focus on the sustainable development of publishing in Africa, the IPA held its first ever African Regional Seminar in Lagos, Nigeria on 9 May. With speakers and guests from across the continent, the seminar was a huge success.

The 11th Istanbul Gathering took place on 26 and 27 May. Unfortunately, the current situation in Turkey made it impossible to bring the invited speakers to Istanbul, but the organisers would not be beaten, and the event took place on-line.

Negotiations on possible future international treaties on copyright dominated the last week of May at the meeting of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) at The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). IPA reported daily on the discussions which concluded with a surprise.

The IPA is very happy to publish an extract from the contribution by IPA Secretary General, José Borghino, and Chair of the IPA’s Freedom to Publish Committee, Kristenn Einarsson, to the book Publishers on Publishing, which was published during the IPA Congress in New Delhi earlier this year.

At the London Book Fair’s International Excellence Awards on 11th April, Jacks Thomas, Director of the Fair looked back at his career in publishing, which started when he was just 11, and included time at the Times of India Group, Prentice Hall, and his current position as Chairman and Managing Director of PHI Learning where his focus is on low-cost educational books. She closed, calling him “effectively the father of Indian publishing”.
